How a vertical agitator works
A vertical agitator is mounted on the top of the tank, with a clamp, on a flange or on a plate, and turns a vertical shaft with one or more impellers immersed in the product. The impeller generates the current that dissolves, disperses, homogenises or maintains the mixture; the lip seal or mechanical seal seals the shaft passage.
The key lies in combining impeller and speed: a MARINA axial-flow propeller for low-viscosity products, or large-area blades at low speed, with a geared motor, for viscous products. To learn more about the parts and how they work, see our guide how tank agitators work.

A series for every tank
From the portable clamp-mounted unit to the fixed flange-mounted one, from the small HDPE tank to the 2,000 to 15,000 litre tanks of the VMD/VMR.
The drive the process calls for
Direct-drive motor, coaxial, worm gear or parallel-shaft geared motor, or a pneumatic motor on the MDN, the SBN and the VSIN.
Stainless steel (wetted)
AISI 316 or AISI 316L depending on the series, and AISI 304L or other materials on the VCI/VCIN.
Three finish levels
Industrial, food or sanitary on most series, and a sanitary finish on the IBC mixer.
Sealing to suit the tank
A lip seal for atmospheric tanks and a mechanical seal on the GFL/GFLE and the TANDEM, which also work under pressure or vacuum.

Applications of vertical mixers and agitators in industry
Where InoxMIM vertical agitators work within a process plant.

Food industry
They dissolve sugar, salt, cocoa or milk powder and homogenise yoghurt, milk, cream, juices or pulps. At low speed they produce dairy desserts, cream liqueur, gazpacho or chocolate.

Cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and chemicals
Gels, soaps, colognes, creams and solutions in reactors and IBC containers with a sanitary finish. In chemicals, they mix acidic, basic or corrosive products and work in reactions under pressure or vacuum.

Water treatment
They prepare reagents such as coagulants, lime slurry, hypochlorite, acids or caustic soda, prepare polyelectrolyte and agitate flocculation chambers.
Frequently asked questions about industrial vertical mixers and agitators
When is a vertical agitator better than a side-entry one?
A vertical agitator enters through the top of the tank, whether open or closed, and is suitable for anything from small to large-volume tanks. It is the option for dissolving solids, agitating viscous products with low-speed blades or working under pressure or vacuum. The side-entry agitator is mounted in the lower part and is designed for mixing and maintaining medium and large-volume tanks: see the side-entry agitators.
Which propeller or blade suits a vertical agitator, depending on the product?
For low-viscosity products, similar to water, a MARINA axial-flow propeller is enough, such as the one on the MD/MDN. Viscous or lumpy products call for impellers with a large blade area at low speed, such as those on the GFL/GFLE, and high-viscosity products need a counter-rotating system with an anchor and scrapers, like that of the TANDEM.
Which vertical agitators are suitable for tanks under pressure or vacuum?
The GFLE and the TANDEM, which accept the mechanical seal arrangement that each application requires. The GFL has a single mechanical seal, and series such as the SB/SBR/SBN, the VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN, the VMD/VMR or the VCI/VCIN seal the shaft with a lip seal, designed for tanks at atmospheric pressure. Tell us the working pressure or vacuum and temperature.
Portable or fixed vertical agitator?
The portable SB/SBR/SBN is clamped to the rim of small open tanks and moved from one to another, so a single unit serves several tanks. If the agitator always works in the same tank, or the tank is closed, a fixed flange-mounted one is better: the MD/MDN in HDPE tanks, the VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN with a DN50 flange or the VMD/VMR in medium-sized tanks.
What stainless steel are vertical agitators made of?
It depends on the series. The MD/MDN, the SB/SBR/SBN and the VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN have an AISI 316 shaft and propeller; the VMD/VMR, an AISI 316L shaft and propeller. The IBC mixer, the GFL/GFLE and the TANDEM have all wetted parts in AISI 316L, and the VCI/VCIN is made in AISI 304L or other materials.
Are there vertical agitators with a food or sanitary finish?
Yes. The VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN, the VMD/VMR, the VCI/VCIN, the GFL/GFLE and the TANDEM are made with an industrial, food or sanitary finish, and the IBC mixer is supplied with a sanitary finish. The finish is chosen according to the product and the cleaning requirements of the process; our technical team will tell you which one you need.
What maintenance does a vertical agitator need?
Periodically check the lip seal or mechanical seal, the bearings and the geared motor, and watch out for noise and vibration. On series such as the VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN, the reinforcement tower and the half-shaft extend the life of the motor. You will find a more complete guide in our article on industrial agitator maintenance.
What information does InoxMIM need to recommend a vertical agitator?
The volume and shape of the tank, whether it is open or closed and how the agitator can be mounted; the product, with its viscosity, density and solids; the objective (dissolving, dispersing, homogenising or maintaining), the temperature and, if applicable, the pressure or vacuum. With that information we propose the series, the drive, the impeller and the finish.
