What is the MD/MDN pneumatic agitator for?
The MD/MDN is InoxMIM's basic vertical agitator for low-viscosity dilutions, dissolutions, homogenisation and mixing in small tanks. It has no reducer: the shaft turns at motor speed and the MARINA propeller generates an axial flow that pushes the liquid towards the bottom and makes it rise up the walls, so no sediment is left behind.
It is used mainly in water treatment and also in the food industry. The MD series has an electric motor and the MDN, a pneumatic motor. In both, the motor is joined to the shaft by a coupling sleeve: the motor can be changed in a few minutes and the agitation components can be swapped if the process changes.
This is the right equipment if…
- You prepare reagents (coagulants, lime slurry, hypochlorite, acids or caustic soda) in small tanks.
- The agitator is mounted on a polyethylene (HDPE) tank and has to be light.
- The product has low viscosity, similar to that of water.
- You want simple equipment with a standard IEC motor, or you prefer a pneumatic drive (MDN).
Choose other equipment if…
- The product is viscous, forms lumps or is difficult to mix: a VMD/VMR agitator or, at low speed, a GFL/GFLE is the better choice.
- The tank is open and you want to move the agitator from one tank to another: the portable SB/SBR/SBN with clamp is the better choice.
- You need a reinforcement tower and a longer shaft on a DN50 flange: the VAI/VSI/VDI/VSIN is the better choice.
- You need to emulsify or disperse with high shear: an EM vertical emulsifier is the better choice.
Applications by industry
Where the MD/MDN agitator is usually installed:
Water treatment
HDPE tanks in wastewater treatment plants, drinking water treatment plants and desalination plants: lime slurry and dilution of coagulants such as aluminium sulphate or PAC.
Disinfection and pH adjustment
Preparation of sodium hypochlorite and neutralisation tanks with acids and caustic soda before dosing.
Food and beverage
Brines for meat processors and canneries, simple syrups, liquid colourings and additives or preservatives.
Chemical industry
Mixing of products with a viscosity similar to that of water, liquid fertilisers and solvent preparation.
Features and benefits
Direct-drive motor
No reducer: the shaft turns at motor speed and transfers a lot of energy to the liquid in a short time.
MARINA propeller
Axial flow towards the bottom of the tank that recirculates the whole volume and prevents sedimentation.
Compact and lightweight
Designed to be mounted directly on small-volume HDPE tanks.
IEC motor flange
Three standard sizes (IEC 160, 200 and 250) to suit the motor power.
Quick maintenance
Coupling sleeve between motor and shaft: the motor is detached and replaced with another standard IEC motor.
Interchangeable components
The propeller and shaft can be changed if the tank or the mixing conditions vary.
Mounting configurations
The MD/MDN is mounted on an IEC flange base. The flange size goes with the motor size. Dimensions in mm: A, outside diameter; B, bolt hole centre distance; C, bolt hole diameter.
| Flange | A (mm) | B (mm) | C (mm) | Bolt holes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IEC 160 | 160 | 130 | 9 | 4 to 90° | Lower-power motors; installed directly on the plastic of the tank |
| IEC 200 | 200 | 165 | 11 | 4 to 90° | Intermediate size for more demanding dissolutions |
| IEC 250 | 250 | 215 | Please enquire | 4 to 90° | Higher-power motors and longer shafts for tall tanks |

Options and customisation
Pneumatic motor (MDN)
For plants with compressed air or where an electric motor is not advisable. The speed is controlled with the air flow.
V-Ring seal
Barrier between the tank and the motor when the product gives off corrosive vapours.
Shaft and propeller coating
Protection against aggressive reagents when stainless steel is not enough.
Other materials and propellers
Other materials for the shaft and propeller and other propeller types depending on the mix.
Tank, shroud and control panel
Supplied with a polyethylene tank, motor shroud and control panel.
Lifting system
Manual or automatic, to lift the agitator out of the tank easily.

Frequently asked questions about the MD/MDN pneumatic agitator
What is the difference between the MD and MDN agitators?
The motor. The MD has a direct electric motor and the MDN, a pneumatic motor; the rest of the equipment is the same. The MDN is chosen when the plant has compressed air or an electric motor is not advisable, and it allows the speed to be varied by adjusting the air flow.
At what speed does the agitator turn?
At motor speed, because it has no reducer. With 8, 6 or 4-pole motors, the shaft turns at about 750, 1,000 or 1,500 rpm. This high speed is what speeds up dilutions and dissolutions.
Can it be mounted on a polyethylene tank?
Yes, it is designed for that. It is compact and lightweight, and with the IEC 160 flange it is installed directly on the plastic of the tank without complex metal reinforcements.
Is it suitable for viscous products?
That is not what it is for. The MD/MDN works with liquids with a viscosity similar to that of water. For viscous products or those that tend to form lumps, the VMD/VMR is the better choice or, at low speed and with large blades, the GFL/GFLE.
Which mounting flange do I need?
It depends on the motor. The IEC 160 (Ø 160 mm) is for lower-power motors, the IEC 200 (Ø 200 mm) is the intermediate size and the IEC 250 (Ø 250 mm) is for higher-power motors and longer shafts.
How is the motor changed if it breaks down?
It is detached from the shaft by releasing the coupling sleeve and replaced with another standard IEC motor. It takes a few minutes, so production downtime is short.
