How emulsifiers and mixers work

In an emulsifier, a turbine or rotor spins at high speed inside a fixed head, the stator. The product enters through the centre, centrifugal force drives it against the slots or holes in the head, where it is sheared and milled, and on leaving it disperses into the tank. This circulation brings fresh product to the head until the mixture is homogeneous. The geometry of the head and the rotation speed determine how fine the emulsion is.

Mixers work with less shear. The TURBINE combines a radial and an axial flow that prevent the contents from swirling without baffles, and the EMTB uses the suction of the liquid circulating through its chamber to incorporate powder without lumps. You will find more detail in our guides what types of industrial emulsifier there are and how an industrial mixer works.

InoxMIM EMF bottom-entry emulsifier with shear turbine and head

From low to very high shear

From the gentle mixing of the TURBINE to the micronisation of the MICRO, with particles below 10 microns.

Three installation options

On top of the tank, at its bottom or in the pipeline, depending on the process and the space available.

Viscous products

The EMV/EMVT emulsifies up to 20,000 cP, and the EMF handles very viscous products together with an anchor agitator.

A head for every product

Screen, slotted or perforated on the EM, EMF and EML; multi-tooth and custom-made on the EMLT; two-stage on the EMVT.

Stainless steel (wetted)

AISI 316 or AISI 316L depending on the series, with a food or sanitary finish for food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Frequently asked questions about high shear mixers and industrial emulsifiers

What is the difference between a vertical, a bottom-entry and an inline emulsifier?

The vertical type (EMV/EMVT or EM) is mounted on top of the tank and works submerged. The bottom-entry type (EMF) is installed in the base and dissolves heavy particles better. The inline type (EML/EMLT) goes in the pipeline and emulsifies while it pumps, continuously.

What is the difference between an emulsifier and a mixer?

An emulsifier applies high shear between rotor and stator to break up droplets and particles and produce a stable emulsion. A mixer works with less shear: the TURBINE homogenises and dissolves without altering the structure of the product, and the EMTB incorporates powder into a liquid. We explain this in differences between agitation and mixing.

Which emulsifier is best for a very viscous product?

In the tank, the EMV/EMVT handles products of up to 20,000 cP; if the mixture is difficult, the two-stage EMVT version. The EMF is combined with an anchor agitator. Inline, the EMLT with a multi-tooth head prevents phase separation, and the MICRO performs well with high-viscosity emulsions.

What particle size can be achieved with an emulsifier or a microniser?

It depends on the head, the rotation speed and the product. The EM, EMF and EML emulsifiers reduce particle size and eliminate lumps with the right head. If you need particles below 10 microns, the right equipment is the MICRO microniser: depending on the model, it achieves less than 50, 15 or 10 microns.

How do you incorporate powder into a liquid without lumps forming?

The EMTB solid-liquid mixer draws in the powder with the liquid circulating through its chamber and disperses it instantly, without caking. If you prefer to do it inside the tank, the EMV/EMVT dissolves large quantities of powder. In the pipeline, the EML/EMLT mixes powdered or crystalline solids with the base liquid.

Which emulsifiers and mixers can work under vacuum or pressure?

The EMV/EMVT emulsifier works under vacuum or overpressure without a cooled external mechanical seal, and the TURBINE mixer, with a W/W/V mechanical seal, is installed in nitrogen-blanketed, pressurised or vacuum tanks. For other series and process conditions, contact us and we will indicate the right sealing system.

What material are the emulsifiers and mixers made of?

The parts in contact with the product are stainless steel: AISI 316L on the EMV/EMVT, MICRO and EMTB (polished), and AISI 316 on the EM, EMF, EML/EMLT and the shaft and propeller of the TURBINE. The finish is food-grade or sanitary depending on the series, and the seals are chosen according to the product.

How are emulsifiers cleaned and what maintenance do they need?

They are units with few parts, with a head and rotor designed to clean thoroughly and to be assembled and disassembled easily; the EMTB has quick-release Clamp connections. Maintenance focuses on checking the mechanical seal and the bearings. You will find more detail in industrial agitator maintenance.
