What is the FL90CAI industrial self-priming centrifugal pump for?
Self-priming centrifugal pumps are used when the pump cannot work with flooded suction: the liquid is below the suction, in a tank or a tanker. A standard centrifugal pump will not prime in these conditions; a self-priming pump evacuates the air from the suction pipe and starts pumping on its own.
The FL90CAI is the industrial version of InoxMIM's self-priming pumps, a self-priming stainless steel pump with GAS threaded connections and a graphite/stainless steel or tungsten seal. It comes in three models: the FL91CAI lifts up to 3.5 m, the FL92CAI up to 4 m and the FL93CAI up to 6 m, in all cases in 2-3 minutes. The body, impeller, shaft and piping are made of AISI 316 stainless steel, and the simplicity of its parts makes maintenance easier.
This is the right pump if…
- The pump is located above the liquid level and cannot rely on flooded suction.
- It empties tanks or tankers, or works with lines that carry air.
- It transfers chemical, winemaking or food fluids compatible with AISI 316.
- Your installation uses GAS threaded piping and you need up to 50 m³/h.
Choose other equipment if…
- You need a sanitary design with DN connections: the FL80CAI sanitary self-priming pump has the same curves.
- The pump can work with flooded suction and you need more flow: the FL30CI industrial centrifugal pump, up to 90 m³/h, is better.
- The product is viscous: a self-priming positive displacement pump is the better choice, such as the FL-RF flexible impeller pump.
- You need a bidirectional pump with high vacuum capacity for clean fluids: an FL-AL liquid ring pump is better.
Applications by industry
Where the FL90CAI is usually installed, whenever flooded suction is not possible:
Chemical industry
Transfer of chemicals compatible with AISI 316 from tanks, drums or tankers.
Winemaking
Wine transfer and emptying of tanks and tankers.
Food industry
Transfer of food liquids from tanks or tankers located below the pump.
CIP return
Return of the cleaning solutions, where the suction line draws in air.

Frequently asked questions about the FL90CAI industrial self-priming centrifugal pump
How high can an FL90CAI self-priming centrifugal pump lift?
It depends on the model: the FL91CAI lifts up to 3.5 m, the FL92CAI up to 4 m and the FL93CAI up to 6 m. In all three cases priming takes 2-3 minutes, according to the catalogue curves.
What is the difference between the FL90CAI and the FL80CAI?
They have the same performance curves and the same suction lift. The FL90CAI is the industrial version, with GAS threaded connections and a graphite/stainless steel or tungsten/tungsten seal. The FL80CAI is the sanitary version, with DN connections and seals that can be EPDM.
Which model do I need?
The one that covers your suction lift and your duty point. The FL91CAI delivers up to 20 m³/h and 21 m head (water column); the FL92CAI, 30 m³/h and 40 m head; and the FL93CAI, 50 m³/h and 61 m head.
Do you need to fill the pump before the first start-up?
Yes. A self-priming centrifugal pump needs its body filled with liquid to start drawing; from then on it evacuates the air from the pipe on its own. It is advisable to check this after every complete drain or maintenance work.
Can it run dry?
No. Being self-priming does not mean it can run without liquid: the mechanical seal is cooled and lubricated by the product itself. If the installation could run out of liquid, a level or pressure sensor to stop the pump is advisable.
What connections can it have?
As standard, GAS or DIN 11851: 1½" thread on the FL91CAI, 2" to 2½" on the FL92CAI and 2½" to 3" on the FL93CAI. On request it is supplied with DIN 2576 flanges, Clamp, SMS or RJT.
