What is a liquid ring pump and what is it used for?
A liquid ring pump has a bladed impeller which, as it rotates inside the casing, drags the liquid itself along and forms a ring with it that seals the chambers between the blades. These chambers draw in and deliver both liquid and air, so the pump primes itself: it empties the suction line without having to fill it first. In addition, reversing the motor's rotation makes it pump in the opposite direction.
That is why it is used to fill and empty tanks, tankers and drums of clean liquids, especially in wineries, olive oil mills, dairies and chemical plants. InoxMIM's FL-AL series has wetted parts in AISI 316, a hygienic seal and DIN 11851 connections. It ranges from the FL20AL (DN 20), which can be fitted with a DC motor, to the FL80AL (DN 80, 15 kW), which reaches 55 m head (water column) and about 54 m³/h.
This is the right pump if…
- You transfer wine, must, vinegar, oil, milk or whey, or chemicals such as acids, solvents, detergents or inks.
- You have to draw from a lower level or empty hoses and pipes containing air.
- You want to fill and empty with the same pump, simply by changing the direction of rotation.
- You need to work without a three-phase supply: there are versions with a single-phase or DC motor.
Choose other equipment if…
- The product contains suspended solid particles (pulp, grape skins, pieces): an FL-RF flexible impeller pump or the FL-CH helical impeller centrifugal pump is better.
- It is a viscous product (creams, syrups, honeys): an FL-PRL lobe pump is better.
- You need a self-priming pump of sanitary design for dairy or beverages in a process line: the FL80CAI self-priming pump is better.
- You need more than 55 m³/h with a flooded suction: a centrifugal pump is better.
Applications by industry
Sectors in which the catalogue places the FL-AL liquid ring pumps:
Winemaking
Transfer of wine and must between tanks, tanker loading and hose emptying.
Oil and vinegar
Transfer of oil in the olive oil sector and of vinegar between tanks.
Dairy industry
Transfer of milk and whey, with wetted parts in AISI 316 and a hygienic seal.
Chemical industry
Acids, solvents, detergents and inks, with Viton (FKM) seals when the product requires it.
Features and benefits
Self-priming
It draws in air and liquid at the same time, so it primes itself and empties the suction line.
Reversible
It pumps in both directions by reversing the motor's rotation: the same pump fills and empties.
AISI 316 stainless steel
All wetted parts are made of AISI 316, with NBR seals as standard.
Hygienic seal
C/C/N mechanical seal as standard, or S/S/V as an option for more demanding products.
Motors for every installation
DC, single-phase or three-phase, from 0.22 to 15 kW.
Nine versions
From the FL20ALH to the FL80AL, with connections from DN 20 to DN 80 to match the flow rate to each use.

Frequently asked questions about the FL-AL liquid ring pump
How does a liquid ring pump work?
With a bladed impeller that rotates inside the casing and drags the liquid along, forming a ring against the wall. That ring closes off the chambers between the blades, which draw in and deliver liquid and air at the same time. That is why the pump is self-priming and can empty the suction line without being primed first.
What flow rate and head does the FL-AL deliver?
It depends on the size. The FL80AL, with a 15 kW motor and DN 80 connection, reaches 55 m head and about 54 m³/h; the small models, DN 20 and DN 32, work with flow rates of a few m³/h. The duty point of each model is read from the catalogue curves.
Can it pump liquids with particles?
No. The FL-AL pumps are designed for clean fluids with no suspended solid particles. For products with pulp, grape skins or pieces, an FL-RF flexible impeller pump or the FL-CH helical impeller centrifugal pump is better.
Are there versions with a DC motor?
Yes. Models FL20AL to FL50AL can be fitted with a DC motor (12 V or 24 V), useful where there is no mains power. There are also versions with a single-phase or three-phase motor.
What is the advantage of it being reversible?
It lets you work in both directions with the same pump: simply reverse the motor's rotation to switch from filling to emptying a tank or tanker, without swapping the hoses over.
Can it run dry?
No. It needs liquid inside the casing to form the ring and to cool the mechanical seal. Before the first start-up the casing must be filled with liquid; from then on, the pump primes itself.
