How a side-entry agitator works

A side-entry agitator, also called a horizontal agitator, enters through the tank wall, in the lower part and at the right angle. Its propeller drives the product and creates a current that runs through the whole volume and sweeps the bottom, preventing settling, dead zones and temperature differences. A mechanical seal keeps the shaft passage leak-tight.

It is the usual solution for mixing and maintaining medium and large-volume tanks with compact equipment that leaves the top of the tank free. For dissolving solids or agitating very viscous products, a vertical agitator is the better choice. To learn more about the models and their uses, see our guide to horizontal and side-entry agitators.

InoxMIM LECOR side-entry agitator with geared motor, anchor flange and propeller

The whole volume in motion

Installed in the lower part and at the right angle, it sweeps the bottom and prevents dead zones, settling and temperature differences.

From 0.25 to 22 kW

From the compact LMDS to the LMRE with geared motor, with propellers from 110 to 800 mm in diameter.

GAMMA or MARINA propellers

On the LMD/LECO and the LECOR/LMRE, to match the thrust to the product and the tank.

Stainless steel and mechanical seal

Wetted parts in AISI 316 or AISI 316L depending on the series, and a C/C/N mechanical seal on the shaft.

A finish for every sector

Industrial, food or sanitary on the LMD/LECO and the LECOR/LMRE, for chemicals, water, food or pharmaceuticals.

Sizing advice

We calculate the power, the propeller, the mounting height and the mounting angle according to your tank and your product.

Applications of side-entry agitators in industry

Where InoxMIM side-entry agitators work within a process plant.

Side-entry agitator in a food product tank

Food and beverage

They maintain and homogenise milk, juices, soft drinks, oils or whey in storage tanks. In the winery they are used for blending, fermentation and distributing sugars.

Chemical treatment plant with stainless steel tanks

Chemical industry

They mix and maintain brines, acids, colourings, thickeners, resins or latex in medium and large-volume tanks, with an industrial finish.

Side-entry agitator in a water treatment tank

Water treatment

They keep sludge, slurries and wastewater in suspension and homogenise flocculants, so that solids do not settle at the bottom of the tank.

Frequently asked questions about industrial side-entry agitators

What are the advantages of a side-entry agitator over a vertical one?

It is installed in the lower part of the tank, at the right angle, and moves the whole volume with compact equipment that leaves the top of the tank free. That is why it is the usual solution for mixing and maintaining medium and large-volume tanks. For dissolving solids or agitating products that are very viscous or form lumps, a vertical agitator is the better choice.

Which side-entry agitator do I need for my tank size?

For small or medium-sized tanks, the LMDS, from 0.25 to 0.75 kW, is enough. For medium and large volumes, the LMD/LECO reaches 5.5 kW and the LECOR/LMRE, with geared motor, 22 kW and 800 mm propellers. In the winery, the portable LV serves tanks of 10 to 50 m³. The exact power also depends on the product.

GAMMA or MARINA propeller on a side-entry agitator?

Both are available on the LMD/LECO and the LECOR/LMRE. As a general rule, the MARINA is used for low-viscosity liquids and the GAMMA provides more thrust in denser products or those with solids in suspension. The diameter is chosen according to the power, the volume and the shape of the tank: from 110 to 325 mm on the LMD/LECO and from 250 to 800 mm on the LECOR/LMRE.

What does the tank need in order to install a side-entry agitator?

A connection in the lower part of the tank, at the right angle for the current to run through the whole volume. The fixed series are mounted with a DIN 2576 flange: DN50 on the LMDS and from DN 125 to DN 300 on the LMD/LECO and the LECOR/LMRE. The portable LV needs no flange: it couples to the DN 50 DIN 11851 ball valve.

What stainless steel are side-entry agitators made of and what finishes do they have?

The LV has an AISI 316 shaft and propeller and the LMDS has AISI 316 wetted parts; the LMD/LECO and the LECOR/LMRE have an AISI 316L shaft and propeller. The LMD/LECO is made with an industrial, food or sanitary finish, and the LECOR/LMRE in an industrial version or a food or sanitary version. All of them seal the shaft with a C/C/N mechanical seal.

Which side-entry agitator is used in wineries?

For blending, fermentation, gassing with SO₂ and CO₂ or distributing sugars, the LV wine agitator couples to the ball valve and is moved from one tank to another. If you prefer a fixed agitator in each tank to maintain wines, liqueurs or spirits, the option is the LMD/LECO with a DIN 2576 flange.

What maintenance does a side-entry agitator need?

Periodically check the mechanical seal, which keeps the tank leak-tight, and the bearings, and on the LECOR/LMRE the geared motor as well. Watch out for leaks, noise and vibration. The LMDS has interchangeable parts that make repairs simpler. You will find more detail in our article on industrial agitator maintenance.

What information does InoxMIM need to size a side-entry agitator?

The volume, diameter and height of the tank and where the side connection can go; the product, with its viscosity, density and solids in suspension; the objective (mixing, maintaining, evening out temperatures or preventing settling) and the finish your sector requires. With that information we calculate the series, the power, the propeller and the mounting angle.
